The Big One - Valentine's Night!

The Big One - Valentine's Night!

On Saturday I had a Valentine’s date that’s going to take some beating. I took Fiona to the super-stylish Covent Garden Hotel for dinner - a few glasses of bubbles, of course - and a screening of Mamma Mia in the hotel’s swanky private cinema.

Fiona looked frankly amazing in a black dress. The minute I clapped eyes on her in the foyer I knew I’d made the right choice.

And the hotel, well, it's a superb choice for Valentine’s night. Or any night, come to think of it. The food was wonderful, the service impeccable, the skilled and friendly bar staff concocted some blinding cocktails - and the décor there is sumptuous. If Cupid had dropped in to spot-check the arrangements in person, he'd definitely give it the nod of approval.

After our fantastic four-course meal, we descended to the screening room and sunk into a couple of its big leather chairs with a bottle of white wine and an ice bucket. It was now that we experienced the only downside to the evening - Pierce Brosnan’s ropey vocal work in Mamma Mia. At least he had a good stab at it, I suppose!

We headed back to the bar once the credits started rolling, had a few nicely crafted cocktails and, yes… a kiss or two, as well. Now I’m blushing.

And will I see her again? I’m hoping that’s on the cards… What a night! What a week!

Date Six - Souk Medina

Date Six - Souk Medina

And so… the final date. But which girl will I be ordering Cupid to fire his arrows at?

My Friday-night date was with Romany in the Moroccan restaurant Souk Medina, which - owing to its rigorously enforced dim-lighting policy and a large number of dark corners - is a superb place for couples to get cosy.

Romany was a truly impressive girl - sassy, witty, super-confident, very amusing and very sexy. I liked her. And not even the uber-lithe belly dancer that appeared after half an hour distracted me from our energetic chat.

Of course, the very decent red wine we were drinking helped to keep the conversation fizzing - but I get the feeling Romany doesn’t need any liquid assistance to be entertaining. She’s a riot - definitely the life and soul of the party.

I knew that I had a tough decision to make about who to take to my super-posh date at the Covent Garden Hotel.

And really, it came down to two girls: Romany, and Fiona, the Scottish lawyer I’d met the night before.

It was a difficult decision, but I’ve ordered Cupid to unleash his firepower at Fiona.

What a week!

We’ll be having a champagne dinner tonight and watching Mamma Mia in the hotel’s private cinema. I just hope we get seats at the back…

Date Five - Radisson Edwardian Mountbatten Hotel

Date Five - Radisson Edwardian Mountbatten Hotel

The Dial Bar at the Radisson Edwardian Mountbatten Hotel is an ideal location for a romantic rendezvous - it's littered with comfy sofas, the lighting is on the low side and the staff have something of the efficient and discreet air about them.

So as I perched at the bar with a glass of wine, before my penultimate date turned up, I was in the dating mood. And when Fiona arrived, I was even more in the mood. I thought she was lovely from the off!

So quite why I decided to launch into a conversation about a pair of headphones I'd just bought, I'll never know. But by the end of my rambling, she was still there. Phew!
We managed to secure one of the above-mentioned comfy sofas, ordered some expertly mixed drinks and chatted away as the snow fell outside in the chilly night air.
As Fiona told me about her job as a lawyer - my mind was dwelling on courting her again as soon as possible.

So yes, she's definitely in the running for the big Valentine's dinner! However, there is one more date to go... log on tomorrow to see who I've plumbed for!

Date Four - Bunker Bar

Date Four - Bunker Bar

I'm not entirely sure how much I managed to impress my fourth date, Sarae. She's a lithe and healthy pilates instructor - and I spent much of the evening delving into a huge plate of ridiculously moreish chicken nachos (warning: it says its a starter, but its enough to feed a small army) and pints of lager. Not exactly the healthy option.

But who can blame me? Especially since the lager at trendy Bunker bar - our dating venue - has its very own micro-brewery and serves up some of the most flavoursome beer I've ever had.
They take great pride in their bubbly brews, and quite rightly. They've won loads of plaudits for it.

And my date deserves some praise, too. She was bright, full of beans and kept me (almost) totally distracted from the England v Spain football match that was playing on the bar's big screen. Thumbs up!

A Valentines night this Saturday at the uber-posh Covent Garden Hotel with Sarae would be great fun, I'm sure of it. And maybe she could teach me some fancy pilates moves to help burn off the Bunker nachos and beer?  It could work...

Date Three - Monmouth Coffee Company

Date Three - Monmouth Coffee Company

My third tête-à-tête took place at the Monmouth Coffee Company - and the default setting of my date - Nia - appeared to be that of someone who’d already had several lattes!

Boy could she talk. But in a very endearing way.

The coffee shop is a perfect location for a cosy chinwag - but it might be worth phoning ahead to ask when it’s quiet to guarantee having one sitting down, because it’s a very popular place and the tables are like gold dust.

It’s not surprising it’s a favourite haunt for Seven Dials denizens, because the Monmouth Coffee Company have a fantastic selection of roasts and some mouth-watering pastries and cake-type fare, too. And the staff do a good line in chirpy banter. Top marks!
In between sips of Ethiopian coffee I learnt a fair bit about Nia, due to her brisk Welsh patter. Conversation certainly wouldn’t dry up on the Valentine’s date, which could be a big plus point. She’s quite cute, too. But will she be trumped by any of the next three dates? Watch this space!

Date Two - Food for Thought

Date Two - Food for Thought

One thing is for certain - you're guaranteed a cosy date at Food For Thought. This acclaimed emporium of top-quality vegetarian foodstuffs is really popular and squishing up with other diners is often the only way to get a seat. But they're a friendly crowd, so if you do go (and you really should) - don't be shy!

My second date, Kerry, was running a bit late, so I waited by the door watching, seemingly, every shopper in Covent Garden walk in through the door and descend to the restaurant below.

Luckily, though, the table gods were smiling on us and we got a space in the corner and launched into a really interesting conversation over some rustic, meat-free nosh.
Kerry is a veterinary nurse and I was keen to know if she'd treated any lions. She hadn't. Apparently that's quite a specialised area of the field. But still, it was intriguing meeting someone with a truly worthwhile job. Pet-mending will always get the thumbs up from me.

I liked her upbeat, smiley personality - but Im not certain I was taken enough to invite her to the Valentines dinner date. Its food for thought though!

Date One - Canela

Date One - Canela

And we're off! My week of Seven Dials dating has begun. I set off to meet the first (obviously incredibly lucky!) woman, Ferrelyn, feeling upbeat and confident, partly because I'd armed myself with some tricks and tactics for impressing women from top seduction artist Adam Lyons (www.attractionexplained.com).

The venue was Canela, a cafe in Earlham Street that serves up authentic Portuguese and Brazilian cuisine and a decidedly laid-back vibe. Just the ticket for a chilled-out Sunday-afternoon rendezvous. We spent a good couple of hours in there and it flew by, because Ferrelyn was really bubbly and chatty.

There was barely a let-up in conversation. I lost focus slightly when our wonderfully tasty black bean stews arrived. But then, men aren't known for their multi-tasking abilities, so I don't think Ferrelyn minded too much.

I got the impression that we clicked fairly quickly. But while Ferrelyn has some fantastic qualities - a hilarious excitability over puddings (she looked at the creme caramel dessert she chose like it was a winning lottery ticket), a real gift for keeping conversation flowing and attractive looks, I didn't feel any romantic inclinations towards her, so I don't think I'll be asking her along to the second date on Valentine's Day.

And that meant I didn't feel the desire to deploy any of the advice I got from Adam. Though I have to state for the record that if the rest of the week is as fun as yesterday was, then I'm in for a splendid time.

Make sure you log on tomorrow to see how my Monday-night date goes!
