With the Royal Wedding fast approaching, Seven Dials is getting into the spirit of things with newly installed celebratory bunting.
Taking inspiration from the age old wedding tradition of something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue, we bring you a selection of experiences and gifts to indulge in, as well as a wealth of commemorative items to treasure and keep forever.
For something old - head to The Loft on Monmouth Street where you will discover new and second-hand designer goods at discounted prices. Also on Monmouth Street is Mon Plaisir London’s oldest surviving French restaurant. Toast the Royal couple over their fine fayre - we recommend their traditional French onion soup followed by steak tartare washed down by a full bodied red.
There is plenty of ‘new’ stuff in Seven Dials with the Royal Wedding in mind. Domestic goddesses will love washing up with their street party dishes with a commemorative tea towel – check out Magma’s Limited Edition regal corgi Royal Wedding tea towel By Gemma Correll or their ‘I Do’ Tea Towel, designed by Swedish artist Maria Dahlgren. Alternatively, for the more classic English Countryside look, Cath Kidston is stocking a beautifully illustrated souvenir tea towel. Iconic London-bred brand Tatty Devine on Monmouth Street has applied their quirky touch to the Royal Wedding with their commemorative Cameo Necklace, which features Wills & Kate silhouette in Perspex. This vintage inspired piece is inscribed with "Will & Kate 29th April 2011", so you will never forget their special day. Finally show your best wishes with a whimsical t-shirt by Brit designer Alice Temperley bearing the message ‘Dreaming of a Magical Future’ from the newly opened flash store JUST at 36-38 Earlham Street, which is brought to you by the environment and human rights charity EJF - Environmental Justice Foundation.
‘Borrow’ some creative from The Dover Bookshop on Earlham Street, which is favoured by artists, craftsmen, architects and costume designers looking for source materials for their designs. Especially for the wedding, the store is selling a keepsake paper dolls book, featuring dolls of the Prince and his soon to be wife, plus an impressive wardrobe of costumes to dress them up in.
And for something blue then look no further than Laura Lee on Monmouth Street for her tanzanite and diamond ring, set in white gold – a simply stunning piece to rival Kate’s sparkler. Whilst you are in the area, be sure to take a look at the famous blue plaque that marks the birthplace of Monty Python’s Flying Circus in Neal’s Yard and 13 Monmouth Street where former Beatles manager Brian Esptein ran his successful management company, which is also marked by a blue plaque.
